    Alexander….

I seem to be able to access the Consolidated Signals Tool only from your email of today. I would have expected a link to it on the Custom Portfolio Builder page. What am I missing?

    Thanks,

P.S. This looks like a great enhancement.

This consolidated signals tool (in pie-chart form) is a great addition to your subscription service along with the Custom Portfolio Tool.

Once I choose 4 strategies and allocate the percentage to each strategy, will this tool automatically update the allocation percentages for various ETFs overnight tonight, when the signals for September come out?

    Thanks.

    Hello Sunil,

the allocations to the ETF will be updated automatically by tomorrow morning US time, you´ll see them for breakfast.

For the time being your individual allocations to strategies are NOT updated, you´ll have to quickly type them in again. That´s a feature for the next release.

I really like the portfolio builder and signal consolidation tool. This is a great enhancement to the service. It will personally help me each month. I’ll let you know if I have any questions as I work through it.

Is there any update on the progress of the monthly switching strategy you’ve been working on?

“Switching to the fastest horses in our stable of strategies once a month?”

the CAGR of your selected strategy or portfolio is visible on the Portfolio Builder page, here it´s rather only the signals.

Consolidated allocations for Max Sharpe total more than 100%; actually about 106%. This tool worked OK last month so a bug must have recently crept in. Thanks for taking a look.

Second consolidated allocation I looked at, Max 10% Volatility, totals 107%.

Looking at the portfolio options for the online optimizer page on the website, there are some portfolios with a “Lev 2” preface. For example, “Lev 2:min volatility” portfolio is listed separately than “Min Volatility” portfolio. What is the difference between these portfolios? What does “Lev 2” mean?

I am currently setting my custom portfolio to have 50% max yield which requires rebalancing every other week and 50% gold-usd which requires monthly rebalancing. On a consolidated basis, should I only rebalance the max yield every other month and the other strategy monthly when the signal comes OR should we rebalance all strategies monthly? Thanks in advance for your advice. Happy holidays.

Thanks Vangelis. Broadly speaking, I am trying to construct a portfolio for 2017 using ~2-3 strategies. While the custom portfolio tool / consolidated signal is very helpful and powerful as it shows us the model risk/return of various strategy composition, I am trying to get a better understanding on the p&l driver for each strategy, i.e., what market will make a strategy works and what environment will make it not work as well until market normalizes. I have read the white paper, and read some of the forum posts, but would love to hear your advice on how best to get a better understanding on this.

For instance, 2015 was a tough year for various strategies given the macro events that drove volatility, especially the August 2015 cny depreciation sell off. Why is that? Is that because such events make momentum gauging difficult? I remember Alex mentioned that in one of his responses. But would love to hear your thoughts further. 2017 could be a bumpy ride given rates vol, various geopolitical events coming up etc.

In addition, would you recommend sticking to a fixed allocation to each strategy for an extended period of time based on user’s risk appetite as opposed to keep playing with the allocation say every month or two?

    Thanks,
    Howard

    Hi Howard,

I am sure the powers that be will answer you. I will give you a quick opinion and say that if you wish to use say the 3 best strategies each month then you can do so by building it up in the quant software they have released. Basically set them all up and each month it will pick the best performing strategies and you can then allocate to them!

If you want to stick to a fixed strategy and mix 3 then in my opinion looking for diversity instead of trying to predict (which is impossible) might be a good idea.

Sorry to Everybody, we’re having a hard time with the Online Consolidation Tool today. We´re having constant issues with the data provider, which leads to missing data in the tables.

If you experience this, please try hitting “Update Allocations” a second time some seconds after an incomplete table being rendered. As a safety rule, please also always confirm market price and the resulting dollar and share allocation.

Should the problems persist, please use the offline tool from here: https://logical-invest.com/blog/strategy-signals-simple/

We are trying to fix this as soon as possible and looking into a more permanent fix also.

The Online Consolidation Tool is now back to normal, once again sorry for the inconvenience this week! Symbol quote prices are now updated once every hour, instead of realtime for each query. Dear Alexander,
This may seem simplistic but can a general risk level be applied to the Custom Portfolio options the way you do when describing your individual strategies ? For example when reviewing the BUG on its strategy page it has a ‘half pie” chart which ranges from lowest risk on the left to highest risk on the right. How would such a half pie chart apply to say Maximum Sharpe , Minimum Volatility and the rest of the choices under Portfolio Options at the top of this page.

    Thanks,

    Tom Rennard

  • Alexander Horn

    Post count: 364

Hi Tom, the risk gauge on the individual strategy pages is based on volatility since inception, so rather straight forward. See little “?” close to gauge chart, for example here:

    <8% - Dark Green
<15% - Light Green (average long term bonds 20 yrs)
    <20% - Yellow (average S&P500 over last 20 yrs)
    <30% - Orange
    >30% – Red

    So in the Portfolio Builder:
MaxSharpe, MinVol, Max Vol <7% would be dark green,
Max Vol <10%, Lev Min Vol, Max Vol <15%, Max DD < 15 / 10%, and Lev Max Sharpe would be light green, and if I see correct, all others would be Yellow (so still at or below the historical volatility level of the S&P 500).

In constructing a custom portfolio, it appears that I need to determine ahead of time 1) the meta strategy, and 2) the resulting mix in terms of CAGR, Volatility, Draw down and Sharpe. Then allocate across the strategies to comport with the meta strategy and mix goals.

    Is the the right approach?

    Cheers! Cal

The Signal Consolidation is a wonderful tool, which I use every month.

I am noticing a bug this month. The online tool is defaulting to $100,000 and not accepting input. For example, if you enter $256,000 (in input USD to amount to allocate) it still calculates all the allocations for $100,000 total portfolio.

    Can you please fix this?

When we receive signals for 3x ETF’s – am I understanding properly, that we need to scale that down to equate to a non leveraged version? Or do we implement the trade with the full 3X leverage, and indicated share sizes corresponding to the trades? (Not interested in risk tolerance – etc, just the concept of implementation).

The Consolidated Signals display for 15% max volatility creates a table with missing columns for DBAP.
This renders the form fairly unusable.

    To reproduce:

    1. go to Consolidated Signals page
    2. put in an amount and email address
    3. Choose “Max 15% Volatility”
    4. Choose “Update Allocations”

See the resulting tables have rows for DBAP that are missing data. (see attached)

    Hi Alex,

Is the consolidated tool working? The update allocations turns red but no numbers appear. This is set on max Sharpe. I also note that for last month e.g. Sep 1 when I ran this somehow it didn’t calculate fully somehow since I have Max sharpe in 2 different accounts and the holdings in 1 are 15 securities and 9 in the other. The query was run at the same time same day, max 10 minute interval. I have the exported excel sheets for both queries unless I made an error.

When reviewing the posts relating to the Consolidated Allocation Tool, it seems there are several posts questioning the reliability of the tool. Is there any work to develop a more robust tool for subscribers for rebalancing portfolios? I have experienced many events where the tool returns incorrect values, but eventually, after multiple try’s, it returns what appears to be correct values.

My typical routine is to use the excel tool to determine strategy weights. I then transfer those weights to the online tool to determine specific holdings. When it takes multiple attempts to determine specific holdings, I question the tools reliability.

I retried the tool online now and for the same portfolio get very different results for Max Sharpe. I got 50% TMF/50% ZIV. Hello Michael, thanks for the note. You are right that the allocations for Max Sharpe add to 106.7%, but thats actually ok and not an error. The leveraged BUG is all in this month with 197%, and with 6.96% allocated to this strategy the total allocation is above 100%.

You could certainly reduce it down to 100% if your account does not allow margin.

    Hello Howard,
On a strategy level, you should rebalance MY twice a month and GLD-USD monthly (when respective signals are posted).
On a account level, you can rebalance the 50/50 allocation of your capital to each strategy as often as you wish.
Our experience is that rebalancing across strategies more often than once a month is an overkill.

    Hi Cal,

yes, the approach we suggest is:

    1) Have a look at how strategies work, which ones do you feel comfortable with fundamentally?
    2) Try the different “preconfigured” Markowitz optimized portfolios to understand the mechanics and get a grip of what kind of portfolio best fits you?
    3) If you want, customize your own portfolio, or stick with one of the options.

–> Done, you got your portfolio. Now each month simply run the consolidated signals for your portfolio, rebalance and enjoy your day. With some practice this should not take more than 15 minutes a month.

  • Alexander Horn

    Post count: 364

    Hi Ben,

actually prices are updated once an hour, for example last update for SPY was at 9:49 CST with $247.6, and in consequence $$ and shares to hold vary. The allocations for each strategy at ETF/stock level are updated according the the signals we send out, e.g. MYRS bi-weekly, other monthly. What is not changing in line with the Markowitz MPT are the allocations at portfolio level, e.g. among strategies.

Important that you look at the % allocations between strategies and at ETF/stock level at each rebalance date – bi-weekly if MYRS is involved, monthly if only othr strategies. The $ and shares obviously change with every underlying price move once an hour, but that does not mean you should follow these in your portfolio

Ok thanks for the clarifications. I understood that the prices can be updated every day and thus the changes to the amount of shares. What I’m interested in is to get the latest signals based on the latest price actions. I’m new here so I’m hesitant to use the signals since some are almost a month old.

But is it possible to get signal based on latest price data by using the QuantTrader program?

the prices are maximum one hour “old”, they are automatically updated. My comment was regarding the performance table of the strategy, this is only showing weekly performance.

And yes, QuantTrader also allows you to updates prices daily, or even intraday. See latest version here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/43364046/Logical-Invest%20QuantTrader%20versions/QuantTrader500S.zip

    Hi Nelson,

running the QT backtest for 3x UIS with rebalancing every two weeks, the 10yrs performance drops slightly (3% p.a.), but this is considering also rebalancing SPXL every two weeks. Not an easy way to backtest changing only TMF, would guess it´s slightly better, or less of a drop.

From a practical perspective I would also opt to rebalance TMF every two weeks. See screenshots attached.

    Hi Levi, appreciate your comments.

As with all the tools and features we´re offering, we´re gradually developing, refining and debugging them. This is also true for the portfolio builder and online consolidation, both not being trivial processes and unique on the web from our understanding. While we do our best only to launch tools we´ve extensively tested by our own prior to launching them, we heavily depend on the community for the debugging thereafter – and here speed in reply is out biggest commitment.

Most companies would move this communication into an offline email channel or helpdesk, but we prefer the community seeing all back and forth in the forum – with the side-effect that you see a long list of issues, and only some “virtual hugs” when things work fine, sigh 🙂

Working offline with Daniel there are currently two possible causes for issues which can cause improper results being displayed, and I´m working to eliminate them:

    1) The signals had not been propagated into the tool when our early-birds query the rebalancing at 3-5 am US CST after receiving the signal emails (we probably need to delay the signal mails by an hour or so), or
    2) The consolidated tables from queries are still in calculation (takes up to 5-6 secs to query market prices) so users might mistakenly take the results of the previous query. This can especially occur when the update button is hit several times within seconds, then the underlying process gets slower and people might grab the results before they are updated. I will in future display the last portfolio the same user had used – instead of the previous query from possibly other users.

But at the end, if you feel the current state of development of this tool is not reliable, then you can always use the Excel tool which allows you to verify in detail.

Ok, here to update you on the progress, trying to eliminate all potential sources of troubles one by one:

    1) We start with empty tables and charts, till portfolio selection is made
    2) We display results only after a very long 10 secs delay to make sure everything is updated
    3) Both tables display totals for % and $$ allocated so you can verify correctness
    4) If selected portfolio is changed, we reset tables till new ones are queried.

Not the most sexy visualization currently, but this comes second. 🙂

Hi Nelson, see “Unsubscribe” at the top of the thread / page, that will do the trick.

Hmmm. Even unchecking the “Notify me” box for the question I just posted did not affect getting email about your reply. What is the purpose of that box?
At the top of my page it says subscribe. I can toggle it to say unsubscribe but what I see makes me think I am already unsubscribed?

Under my subscriptions it says “You are not currently subscribed to any forums.”

The Excel download had some issues in browser, just use the “copy” button and then paste into Excel, that should work in all browsers – need to see how to make the Excel stable, will be back later.. also use it a lot 🙂

Sunil, added a “CSV” download button which gives you same functionality as former Excel button. Please check and let me know, probably need to do a CTRL+F5 to reload page.
